It is amazing to see the variety of heavy equipment and machinery used when you step onto a construction site. The cranes with their boom or mast in the air lifting or carrying a load are often the first thing you notice. No matter if you are new to the industry or an experienced veteran, chances are you've seen crane equipment you don't recognize or heard of crane terms. Static Cranes and Mobile Cranes Mobile Cranes There are two main types of cranes: mobile cranes and static cranes. A static crane is a permanent/semi-permanent structure fixed to the ground or building that lifts and moves loads along a fixed path. A mobile crane can be mounted on treads, wheels and moved from job site site to job site. Mobile cranes don't have to follow a fixed route like static cranes. Some mobile cranes have the ability to pick up and transport a load using their treads or wheels. Some mobile cranes can be used with counterweights, outriggers or on-site assembly. An overhead crane has two main components: an overhead bridge, which moves along what is known as a runway and the hoist that moves along the bridge beam. A tower crane has two basic components: a vertical base (the tower), and a rotating horizontal joint that allows the trolley and hoist to travel. The movement of an overhead crane is restricted to a rectangular area, but that of a tower crane is limited by the radius of its jib. A level-luffing Crane is similar to a tower crane. It has a vertical base with attached jib. But it also features additional jib mobility, hook leveling capability, and hook leveling. A horizontal beam, known as the bridge, is used to transport an overhead crane up and down a runway using a track or rail. To lift and lower loads within a rectangular bay, a hoist and trolley move side by side along the bridge. These cranes are used for increasing safety and efficiency in warehouses and facilities. They can lift loads up to 400 tons and have different load limits. A basic way to recognize an overhead crane is to say that it's what it sounds like: the beam moves horizontally upward and downward along a fixed path above a facility or construction site. Tower Cranes Tower cranes can be seen along the skylines of cities. These cranes are used for tall structures, such as skyscrapers. A tower crane's basic components are a vertical tower (also known as a mast) and an outstretched, jib.
